Bluelou -- an overview

Idiot son of Thatcher

Lou McKeever (Bluelou) is a fine art graduate skilled in performance art, digital imaging, photography and painting.

All these media have been used to explore subjects that have a political or humorous aspect. She has had cartoons nationally published in flip-side, and the Times Educational Supplement.

But her first love has always been comics and cartooning and she has self-published the graphic novel ‘MOIS’ and. ’Bluelou’s dodgy dossier’. Her first one woman show ‘Wave and Particle’ - a fusion of comic style and fine art method - met with critical acclaim and was a commercial success.

Lou was recently part of ‘Trans-Atlantink’, the British Council’s Young Cartoonist Project, the 2004 exchange program that offered five emerging South African cartoonists the opportunity to join a process of skills development, creation and exhibition of their craft. Paired with five UK counterparts for interactive and joint learning, the project created opportunities for the ten cartoonists to learn from each other, whilst being mentored by legendary cartoonists Steve Bell (The Guardian) and South Africa’s own Zapiro (Mail & Guardian; Sowetan; Sunday Times). While out in South Africa in November she was published nationally in the Mail and Guardian's international Aids-day special. She was subsequently invited back to be part of the opening in Johannesburg in May.

She is gifted at annoying people in authority or those with terminal pomposity; she has spoken of a sense of homecoming that political cartooning has given her. One day she wishes to be able to annoy the right people in both a professional and a national scale using only a pencil.

Warning: Some cartoons contain nuts, strong language, and are a bit rude. Parental guidance suggested.
